Spread of engineered genes to wild relatives.

چکیده

Over the past 20 years, it has become possible to isolate genes from microbes, plants, and animals and to insert them into a range of plant species. During the next two decades, it is likely that genetically engineered crops will become widespread in agriculture. This presents new opportunities for making plants resistant to pests and diseases, better able to withstand stressful environments, and capable of producing better quality products. As with most significant advances in biological science, questions are raised about the consequences of these developments to life and the environment. One of the principal queries about the widespread use of genetically engineered crops is the likelihood and possible consequences of the introduced genes (transgenes) being transferred by cross-pollination to wild populations of plants. What would happen, for instance, if a transgene conferring resistance to a herbicide or to an important pest became established in a wild plant population? The aim in this short review is to discuss the likelihood of gene transfer and its possible consequences and what procedures are being adopted to evaluate novel transgenic plants before they are used for widespread cultivation.

Molecular Evidence for Gene Flow among Zea Species

mong the concerns associated with the "release" of transgenic plants into the environment is the possibility that genes transformed into a crop plant by recombinant DNA methods could spread into its wild relatives. The process of concern is introgression, the transfer of genes from one population into another via hybridization and subsequent backcrossing. If these genes confer some selective ad...

Investigation of Diversity of Different Agronomic and Morphological Traits in Wild Wheat Relatives

Extended Abstract Introduction and Objective: Wild relatives of wheat are one of the most important genetic resources for use in wheat breeding programs. Therefore, identifying wheat wild relatives and Awareness of the diversity in them, also protecting these species is undeniably effective in expanding the richness of the gene pool and the genetic base of new cultivars and can be a good tool ...

Daisy quorum drives for the genetic restoration of wild populations

An ideal gene drive system to alter wild populations would 1) exclusively affect organisms within the political boundaries of consenting communities, and 2) be capable of restoring any engineered population to its original genetic state. Here we describe 'daisy quorum' drive systems that meet these criteria by combining daisy drive with underdominance. A daisy quorum drive system is predicted t...

Application of wild type crops or wild relatives’ cultivars that are halophyte in plant breeding program would provide better results in order to develop cultivars that are resistant toward drought as well as salinity. Recently, Aeluropus littoralis has attracted the attention of researcher in order to identify novel genes and their regulatory elements that are involved in salinity stress....

Transferability of barley microsatellite markers for assessing genetic relationships of wheat wild relatives of Triticum and Aegilops genera

Comparative genomics has revealed a high degree of collinearity between related species, which allows transferability of interspecies and intergenus   markers. The aim of this study was to examine the transferability of barley microsatellite markers among species of Triticum and Aegilops genus for determination of their genetic relationships. The experiments was carried out in faculty of agricu...
